2-channel MPEG2 encoder
with HDMI inputs and ASI and IP outputs.
Purpose and main features.
2xHDMI/MPEG2 Encoder is intended for broadcast quality encoding up to 2 program (2 HDMI inputs) multiplexed into a stream and transmitted over ASI interface to its output (2 ASI outputs and one IP output).
The encoder supports 576i è 576P input formats. It is controlled over Ethernet.
Due to working with HDMI signals as inputs the encoder helps to solve a problem of conversion of programs received from a satellite in MPEG4 format to MPEG2 format for broadcasting them to cable network equipped with MPEG2 SetTopBoxes. It is an actual problem for today as satellite operators have already started transition from MPEG2 to MPEG4. Using a MPEG4 receiver with HDMI output and MPEG2 encoder with HDMI inputs is much cheaper than using a special MPEG4/MPEG2 transcoder.
There are several modes of IP output operation, which allows to significantly enhance the capacity of the encoder. The encoder ASI output can be connected, for example, to 4ASI and 8ASI converters, QAM modulator or any other device having ASI input. IP output can be used to monitor and transport the stream, as well as for IPTV. ASI and IP outputs operate simultaneously. Up to 15 encoder parameters can be set up.
Operating principle:
The input signal is decoded and digitized into a stream in accordance with ITU-R 656 recommendation. Then it is encoded into MPEG-2 according to ISO / IEC 13818. These operations are carried out separately for each of 2 inputs. Similar operations are carried out for sound also. Then the signal is multiplexed into a single digital stream and transmitted over ASI interface to output, also it is converted into an IP stream and fed to the IP output.
Each of the 2 IP encoder channel can operate in four modes:
1. The output is disabled.
2. The output is commutated to channel 1.
3. The output is commutated to channel 2.
4. The output delivers two multiplexed channels (2 program stream).
